General description of the collection: The Alan W. Simms photograph collection includes a photo album with 80 photographs of activities in New Guinea with an excellent informal portrait shot of General Douglas MacArthur and numerous photos showing how the native peoples of the island aided the United States (U.S.) servicemen. There are 48 photographs of training at Camp Livingston, Louisiana, and of the Louisiana Maneuvers in 1941; the rest of this collection are of men of the 127th Infantry on the Pacific Islands from Australia to New Guinea, Burma and elsewhere. Life on the beaches and in the jungles and the hardships and privations of the soldiers are seen along with the aftermath of several battles and the dead and wounded lying about. General photos of Gary Cooper and his traveling troops who entertained the soldiers; the photography is excellent and the subject matter is superb for a soldier's eye view of war in the Pacific during 1943-1944.
